Why Does the Tire Pressure Monitor Light Come On When It Is Cold?

Your tire pressure monitor system alerts you to low or high air pressure in one of your tires through a light indicator on your dash. When your light comes on, it means one of two things. Either the air pressure is low in a tire or a sensor is faulty. In either case, you should take action when the tire pressure monitor light comes on.

Tire pressure is subject to environmental temperatures. If your tire pressure monitor light illuminates only when it is cold outside, then one of your tires reacts to the cold by showing you a low pressure. During cold weather, the air inside the tire condenses, effectively lowering the air pressure. A sensor that fluctuates due to cold weather is not faulty; it measures accurately.
